ATLANTIC, IOWA POLICE DEPARTMENT
Patrol Officer
The City of Atlantic, Iowa is seeking candidates for the position of Police Officer. At this time we are only accepting applications from certified police officers. An Iowa certified officer may be eligible for a 1-1 match of years of service with another agency as credit towards our longevity wage scale (maximum of 5 years of credit.)
Atlantic is the county seat of Cass County and is located six miles off of I-80, halfway between Omaha and Des Moines. Our community is comprised of around 7,000 residents and our department consist of 13 full time officers, two civilian staff, and 6 reserve officers.
If hired, an Iowa certified officer can receive a $7,500 sign on bonus (to be paid out over 2 years.) This position will also receive a week (40hrs) of vacation and (40hrs) sick time upon hire.
Hiring incentives and bonuses may be negotiated for qualified out of state certified officers.
Residency restrictions to be considered and approved at the discretion of the Chief.

Salary:
- This position will have a wage range of $63,800 - $69,150 July 1st, 2025 (DOQ)
- Family membership to our YMCA provided by the city
- $500 uniform allowance each year
- $300 city contribution to a medical flex plan each year
- Three paid personal holidays each year to be used at the officer’s discretion, with nine additional paid holidays throughout the year
- Comp time earned at time and a half for each hour of overtime worked
Hiring Process:
- Applications will be accepted until May 14th, 2025
- Interviews and testing will be scheduled for candidates to be scheduled for a future date
- POST and MMPI testing date TBD for selected candidates
- Iowa Certified applicants will not have to complete the POST-test
- If selected for further testing, candidates will be sent a second portion of the application used to perform a full background check
- Before being hired, a candidate is required to pass a drug test and have a physical evaluation
- An out of state candidate will need to complete the certification through examination process outline by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.
Testing Requirements:
Out of state applicants must pass the Physical Fitness test as required by the ILEA

Iowa certified applicants will not be required to complete the physical testing
About the Atlantic Police Department/City of Atlantic:
- Our department operates with 13 full time officers and 2 secretarial staff members
- We work a 12 hour schedule consisting of every other weekend off for most officers
- Load bearing vest are approved and facial hair is permitted after academy completion
- Atlantic has a population of approximately 7,000

- Atlantic is located an hour west of Des Moines and an hour east of Omaha

Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be a certified police officer.
- Must be a United States citizen
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- ILEA certification is preferred
- College education is preferred but not required
- Military service will be highly considered
- Must not have any felony convictions or convictions of other crimes involving moral turpitude
