POLICE OFFICER – LATERAL TRANSFERS
The Shelton Police Department is currently accepting applications from Connecticut P.O.S.T.C. Certified Police Officers for the position of Patrol Officer. Applicants must be active Connecticut P.O.S.T.C. certified police officers in good standing with their respective agencies

QUALIFICATIONS
Must be 21 years old, a citizen of the United States, hold a valid Connecticut motor vehicle operator’s license and meet the qualifications as determined by the Police Officer Standards and Training Council as approved in regulations Sec. 7-294e-1 through 7-294e-24 as may be amended from time to time. Testing will be conducted per the requirements of the City Ordinance §2-145b (Ordinance #876) relative to hiring Police Officers, Adopted February 13, 2014.
Applicants must either have a "Comparative Certification"; i.e. a certification whereby the applicant has served as a police officer in another state or in a law enforcement within the state that is not subject to the statutes and regulations of the Police Officer Standards and Training Council or a "Lateral Certification"; i.e. a certification whereby the applicant is currently certified as a Connecticut police officer to a new position as a police officer with a different law enforcement unit within the state.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
A Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice or related field preferred, or in lieu thereof, an Associate’s Degree in criminal justice or related field with two years of responsible employment or in lieu thereof, a high school graduate or equivalent with four (4) years of responsible employment.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Police Officers in the City of Shelton, Connecticut, under regular supervision, perform basic law enforcement duties in accordance with the mission, goals and objectives of the Shelton Police Department and in compliance with governing federal, state and local laws. They are responsible for protecting persons and properties within the City limits, enforcing criminal and traffic laws and City ordinances; maintaining peace and order; preventing and solving crime through visible uniformed patrol or criminal investigations, working with residents, City agencies, business officials, school officials, churches and youth to solve problems that threaten safety or lead to crime and fear of crime. The Shelton Police Officer Job Description is attached hereto, describing the examples of duties, supervision received, and a more detailed job description, which terms and conditions will apply to each candidate hired. Shelton Police Officers participate in the CMERS pension program.
JOB CLASSIFICATION
As per collective bargaining agreement between the City of Shelton and the Shelton Police Union Contract, entry level Patrolman salary is $71,389 until certification and $74,962 after certification. Top step of pay for Patrol Officer is obtained after 4 years of service and is currently $88,902
MERIT SYSTEM TESTING
The top fifteen (15) candidates who successfully pass the written test will be invited to take an Oral Interview Test, at which time a resume will be required and additional personal information. A combined score of the written and oral test will determine the ranking assigned to each candidate. Each candidate will then be subject to satisfactory polygraph, background check, a psychological examination, drug screening, and medical examination meeting departmental physical fitness standards.
The top ten (10) candidates will remain on a certified hiring list for at least one year from which the City will hire as positions may open.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD
As per collective bargaining agreement between the City of Shelton and the Shelton Police Union.
