POLICE OFFICER

Applicants should have already taken the Dauphin County Chiefs of Police Association (DCCPA) Police Officer Exam prior to submitting an application.  **You can apply before receiving your written score, but will not be able to proceed in the process if you fail to obtain a 70%.** 

In order to formally apply for employment as a Police Officer with the City of Harrisburg, you must satisfy the following General Qualifications pursuant to the Harrisburg Civil Service Rules and Regulations:

  • Age - Must be at least 21 years of age as of June 14, 2021
  • Citizenship - Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Education - Must have graduated from high school or received a G.E.D., or received an equivalent education acceptable to the Harrisburg Civil Service Commission.
  • Driver's License - Must possess a current valid driver's license which has not been restored or suspended since June 14, 2018.
  • General - Must be able to perform the essential job functions of Police Officer as defined in the Official Civil Service Supplemental Application for the position of Police Officer and the Harrisburg Civil Service Rules and Regulations.

If you meet the above General Qualifications, you are eligible to complete the supplemental employment application for the position of Police Officer with the City of Harrisburg, Bureau of Police (additional qualifications as specified in the Harrisburg Civil Service Rules and Regulations, will be verified at a later time). You must achieve a 70% on the written test to apply. 

Please read the included material above (under the APPLY NOW button) thoroughly and follow the instructions contained in the application packet.  The documents above must be received by the Bureau of Human Resources by 11:59 P.M. on the day of the application deadline.  

In addition, also included in the documents above is the MPOETC "Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Physical Fitness Tests and Standards" for your review and information. The minimum Academy entrance requirement is the 30th percentile in each category.  In order to pass the final test administered at the conclusion of the physical fitness program and graduate, cadets must attain a minimum score of the 50th percentile in each category.

During the City's recruitment process, eligible candidates will be provided the necessary information for the next phase of testing or review. Attendance is mandatory at certain phases. Candidates who fail to appear when required will be disqualified from the City's recruitment process.  Candidates successfully completing all phases of the recruitment process will have their names placed on the Civil Service Certified Eligibility List.  Only those candidates whose names appear on the Certified Eligibility List will be considered for appointment to the position of Police Officer.

Please be aware that it is your sole responsibility to notify the Bureau of Human Resources in writing of any changes to the following information during this phase of the process:

  • Your current home address
  • Your home or cellular telephone number
  • Your current place of employment

Failure to provide such notice of change in status in writing may result in your disqualification from consideration for the position of Police Officer.
