Job Summary:

An internship with Walton County Fire Rescue is designed to offer applicants with prior employment experience in the field of Firefighting or related Fire Services category (Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic) the opportunity to observe the processes and inner mechanisms of the division. Selected applicants will potentially be exposed to a mix of administrative functions and field work with crews. 

This position is for those who already have a working knowledge of Fire Services and those who have been previously employed in the field. This is an unpaid apprenticeship with opportunities for growth and extensive training with Walton County Fire Rescue.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

Assist with administrative clerical duties such as filing, data entry, and working with common office equipment. These duties may also include working with office staff in Training, Continuous Education, and Billing.

Write reports that deal with confidential patient, insurance, and health information.

Participate in hands-on patient care while shadowing field personnel on calls. If utilized this level will require specific prior training and certification. 

Participation in specific patient care will also be determined by the certification of the applicant. 

If field work is recommended, the applicant will participate in a continuous training program to improve competence in medical clinical work. Field work may include responding to emergency calls such as requests to transport patients from their homes or for facility to facility transfers. 

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must pass a health examination and Physical Agility Test (Pre-PAT).
  • Must pass a background screening (to include a polygraph examination and credit check).
  • Must pass a drug screening.
  • Must submit a good driving record.
  • Must be able to understand/communicate and follow both verbal and written instructions.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee successfully to perform the essential function of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.

  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery, emergency medical equipment and office equipment including typewriters, copiers, diagnostic equipment, blood pressure cuffs, suction units, immobilization equipment, intravenous infusions, syringes and medications, jaws of life, automatic cardiac/defibrillator monitors, two-way radios, mechanics’ tools, hand tools, etc.  
  • Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are those who have responsibilities involving weight bearing work.
