Job Summary

Engage and build relationships with members of the Smith College Community. Work with other members of this department and community members in creating and implementing problem solving strategies and events that will help support the Smith College community. Exercise police authority and discretion to ensure the delivery of professional law enforcement and other services to the College community.  

Essential Functions

  • Attend and participate in community engagement events and partners with Student Life in events such as Cops-n-Cones, Safety Talks, Lunch with an Officer, Ice Cream handout, Central Check-in, lock down drills, Ride-Along and Food Drives.
  • Provide security services to the College by various means of transportation.
  • Patrol the campus grounds and buildings by vehicle, foot or other approved means.
  • Respond to incidents within the Campus jurisdiction along with other Police Officers. Assume control and protects the crime scene until a higher ranked supervisor arrives.
  • Enforce and report violations of all Department & College rules, regulations, guidelines, policies, and procedures through the chain of command by reports, memos and verbal communication.
  • Attend all department meetings and trainings.
  • Patrol events, parties and other situations that occur on the assigned shift.
  • Receive, investigate, follow-up, document and respond to complaints from the Smith College community, including all types of crimes.
  • Prepare criminal incident report and log on assigned shifts.
  • Enforce campus parking rules and regulations. Provide traffic control when necessary. Register vehicles and bikes as assigned.
  • Assess incidents and request backup assistance from Northampton Police Department or Fire Department, as necessary, according to established protocols.
  • Promptly notify the on-duty Supervisor or on-call Supervisor, of any major incident(s) occurring on campus. Examples as follows; Major fire, sexual assault, sudden death or chance of death, bias incident, major larceny, incidents involving dangerous weapons, Department employee injured on duty, major demonstrations, building takeovers, hazardous material (chemical, environmental, radiation, biological) incidents, major medical disaster, or other similarly related incidents.
  • Administer first aid and CPR to injured people, transport ill/injured students, faculty or staff members to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in accordance with established procedures. Assist Health Services staff with patients as needed.
  • Comply with and enforce State and local laws within the College’s authority.
  • Maintain all criminal justice certifications as required by the Chief of Police. Maintains a valid Massachusetts driver’s license and LTC. Advises the Chief of Police of any status changes as they occur.
  • Responsible for ensuring that arrest and protective custody are proper under the applicable laws; that prisoners are given those rights afforded under State and Federal Laws; that prisoner injuries are documented in writing and first aid is rendered; transport to the lockup, hospital or court is accomplished in a safe manner; that booking paperwork is completed including as assessment of suicide risk and that a suicide monitor is in place while the person is under our control. Responsible for insuring constant suicide monitoring of prisoners, meals are provided at regular intervals and that bail is offered according to accepted court practice.
  • Testify at court or other hearings on behalf of the Campus Police.
  • Provide prompt response to health and safety hazards on Smith College properties. Perform visual inspections and identify safety, lighting and other hazards. Take corrective action when necessary.
  • Cross trained in dispatch
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

  • These are prerequisites to be hired into this position, and must be maintained as criteria for remaining in this position:
    • Completion of a Full-Time Academy (Special State/SSPO or Municipal).
    • If hired without a full-time academy, candidate will not have seniority until the full-time academy is completed (date ofgraduation will be the seniority date).
    • If candidate is unsuccessful in completion of a full-time academy for any reason(s), that candidate will be excused from employment within this job classification.
    • If hired without a full time academy, candidate will attend the next available full time academy in order of their hire date.
  • Must have a valid Drivers’ License.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain shortly after hire CPR and First Responder Certification.
  • Must be able to hold a License to Carry firearms (LTC).
  • Must be able to pass a criminal and work background check, and a medical pre-screening.
