JOB SUMMARY:

 Performs skilled and technical work in operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims and administering emergency medical care to patients on site and while en route to hospital.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements.  Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the work load.

  • Responds to emergency calls as a mobile medical unit driver or attendant.
  • Performs necessary rescue work.
  • Administers necessary emergency care.
  • Responds to non-emergency calls, such as requests to transport patients from hospitals to their homes or from a local medical facility to a specialized medical center.
  • Participants in a continuous training program to improve competence in medical clinical work.
  • Responds to emergency and routine telephone calls, determining immediate action to be taken based on information gained from callers.
  • Assigns, directs and supervises activities of on-scene volunteer help and emergency medical technician trainees, ensuring adherence to established policies, procedures and standards.
  • Assists and advises emergency medical technician trainees, as necessary, resolving problems as non-routine situations arise.
  • May assist with preparing work schedule for EMS staff.
  • Performs other work when necessary as required.
  • Adheres to work schedule and attendance requirements.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Knowledge of emergency medical procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in the emergency care of patients and victims of accidents.
  • Knowledge of County geography and of the location of roads and streets within the County.
  • Knowledge of procedures of extrication, movement of patients, rescue techniques, transportation and psychological needs of a patient.
  • Skill in diagnosing a victim’s condition and applying emergency medical care.
  • Ability to respond quickly and calmly to emergency situations.
  • Ability to safely drive an ambulance at high rates of speed.
  • Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment such as lawn movers.
  • Ability to operate common office equipment such as typewriters and copiers.
  • Ability to understand/communicate and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to deal tactfully, courteously and firmly with the general public.
  • Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment to assess conditions of patients and applies short-term relief.
  • Ability to work in an environment involving the hazards of emergency rescue work, including risk of exposure to infectious diseases.
  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

QUALIFICATIONS, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

 

**Requires certification in CPR and EVOC, Florida registered EMT.  Requires a valid Florida driver’s license.**

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee successfully to perform the essential function of this job.  The work environment characteristics are those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery, emergency medical equipment and office equipment including typewriters, copiers, diagnostic equipment, blood pressure cuffs, suction units, immobilization equipment, intravenous infusions, syringes and medications, jaws of life, automatic cardiac/defibrillator monitors, two-way radios, mechanics’ tools, lawn mowers, hand tools, etc.  Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle.  Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Physical demand requirements are those for very heavy work.

 

SELECTION PROCESS:

Failure to complete required paperwork correctly will cause a delay in the application process and applications to potentially be placed in an "on-hold" status. Applicants will be required to successfully complete:

  • Background investigation which includes but is not limited to:  criminal history, driving history, credit check, and previous employment verification. The background waiver MUST BE SIGNED AND NOTARIZED.
  • Polygraph Examination
  • Pre-employment Drug Screen (including nicotine panel)
  • Successful completion of a Physical Abilities Test

As part of the selection process applicants for consideration will be required to participate in an oral interview process.
