Walton County Fire Rescue serves a population of approximately 30,000 residents living within 738 square miles and provides automatic mutual aid to 4 other fire districts within Walton County. Our firefighters respond to motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, and to combat fires to structures, vehicles, and land.

Our Fire Rescue personnel strive to provide outstanding patient care as well as protect the homes and personal property of our citizens. Our agency also believes in training to be sure our personnel are prepared to face ever-changing scenes they respond to.

Job Description: Firefighter Paramedic

This is technical work in the emergency medical field and in the prevention, control and suppression of structural and non-structural fires. Work involves responding to fire and rescue calls, suppressing fires, rendering emergency medical assistance and transporting patients to the hospital. Work includes operation of fire rescue equipment and maintenance of station equipment and quarters. Work is reviewed through reports and observation of results achieved.

Job Responsibilities: Firefighter Paramedic

100% - The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the work load.

  • Responds to fire calls and actively participates in fire suppression activities as part of a firefighting team.
  • Conducts inspections of commercial and residential property for fire hazards and participates in a fire safety education program.
  • Responds to emergency medical calls and stabilizes the patient through the application of basic and advanced life support.
  • Prepares patients for transport, moves patients from where found into ambulance and transports to hospital.
  • Conducts telemetry recognition and evaluation of EKG strips; evaluates patient’s vital signs and status.
  • Carries out doctor’s orders regarding administration of drugs and administers other related pertinent treatment.
  • Drives an emergency vehicle and applies emergency driving techniques, radio procedures and operations.
  • Participates in fire suppression drills according to NFPA guidelines for training and attends classes in fire suppression techniques, continuing medical education, and related subjects.
  • Adheres to work schedule and attendance requirements.
  • Performs other duties as necessary and required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Firefighter/Paramedic

  • Knowledge of modern fire suppression methods and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of fire rescue equipment and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of procedures in extrication, movement of patients, rescue techniques, transportation and psychological needs of patients.
  • Ability to render effective fire rescue services.
  • Ability to lift patients on a stretcher.
  • Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to operate an emergency vehicle in a safe manner.
  • Ability to deal tactfully, courteously and firmly with the general public.
  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Physical strength, agility and ability to perform assigned tasks.

Qualifications, Training and Experience: Firefighter/Paramedic

Requires: current State of Florida certifications as Firefighter and Paramedic; valid, unexpired certifications in ACLS and            CPR; a valid Florida driver license and successful completion of a 16-hour Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC).

  • Background investigation which includes but is not limited to:  criminal history, driving history, credit check, and previous employment verification. The background waiver MUST BE SIGNED AND NOTARIZED.
  • Polygraph Examination
  • Pre-employment Drug Screen (including nicotine panel)
  • Successful completion of a Physical Abilities Test
