Summary

New hire range is $25.02 - $28.96, depending upon qualifications.

Full-time, Benefit Eligible Position

The purpose of this position is to enforce state and local laws and ordinances, respond to calls for the protection of life and property, conduct criminal and non-criminal investigations, make arrests and to perform other assigned law enforcement and public safety duties. Duties normally consist of patrol and traffic activities in the city on an assigned shift. Officers may be delegated to assignments in specialized areas. May be assigned to special assignments such as training coordinator, motorcycle officer, and other related assignments.
 

Essential Functions

  • Responds to calls for service by contacting complainants and suspects, conducting investigations, gathering information, completing interviews, documenting facts, making arrests when necessary, and writing reports; is responsible for implementing community policing activities which include but are not limited to initiating and furthering "beat projects" to address public safety concerns in their assigned area
  • Patrols designated areas by operating the patrol vehicle/motorcycle, walking, observing, watching for traffic violators, and providing customer service
  • Conducts crime investigations by locating physical evidence, victims, witnesses, and suspects, gathering statements, investigating the crime scene, coming to a conclusion about the crime, and making arrests when necessary
  • Performs all duties as assigned including but not limited to by testifying in court, holding training sessions, acting as detention/booking officer, assisting other units, serving warrants, provide for traffic control, operate radar and other devices, and may be assigned to training field officers
  • Performs related duties as assigned and maintains regular attendance

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Police Officer – Lateral: High school diploma or GED equivalency, supplemented by college
level coursework in criminal justice, or a related field. Associates degree is desirable.
 
Police Officer: High school diploma or GED equivalency. Must be a student in a law enforcement academy with graduation date anticipated to be within six months from date of application, or have graduated from an Arizona POST certified law enforcement academy within nine months from date of application.
 
EXPERIENCE:
Police Officer – Lateral: (In and Out-of-State): One year full-time experience as a peace officer or have resigned in good standing from an agency within 24 months of application. Out-of-State applicants must meet all AZPOST requirements for the waiver process to gain Arizona Peace Officer certification without attending a formal academy.
 
Police Officer: No previous experience, see Education requirements.
 
CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid Arizona Driver's License. Appointment subject to successful completion of extensive background investigation, polygraph, psychological, medical examination and drug test.
 
Police Officer – Lateral: Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) certification. In-state candidates must be AZPOST certified at time of hire. In-state candidates whose certification has expired and out-of-state candidates must be AZPOST certified within six months of hire.
