DEPUTY SHERIFF

 

Brief Position Description

Applicants must have completed the Basic Recruit Training Course for Law Enforcement Officers and possess a current employment certificate of compliance for Law Enforcement issued by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.  Certified applicants who are selected for employment will be hired at a minimum rate of $43,911 per year.  The salary of applicants with previous law enforcement experience will be commensurate based on the previous experience.  A Deputy Sheriff is a sworn member who is eligible for high-risk retirement benefits as well as education incentive payments.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Florida Certified Law Enforcement Officers)

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must possess the following qualifications:

Be at least 21 years of age

Be a United States Citizen

Possess a high school diploma or equivalent

Possess a valid FL driver’s license with a good driving history

Have a good moral character and be drug-free, in accordance with agency policy

Pass a background investigation which includes all items described on the agency’s automatic disqualification list, such as no felony convictions, no misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement, no convictions or injunctions for domestic violence, no dishonorable discharge from any branch of the of the United States Armed Forces, etc.

Minimum Qualifications (Out-of-State Law Enforcement Officers)

Must meet the above qualifications for in-state law enforcement officer with ability to attend Exemption from Training (EOT):

 You may be eligible for an exemption from the basic training requirements if you were an officer in another state or with the federal government and meet the following requirements:

You worked at least one year, full-time as a sworn officer in the discipline you are seeking exemption and;

You received training in that discipline which is comparable to Florida's full basic recruit curriculum or previously completed Florida’s full basic recruit training program and were certified in Florida.

You have no more than an eight year break-in-service since your latest separation from a sworn position.

You may be eligible for an exemption from the full basic training requirements if you were a member of the special operations forces and meet the following requirements:

You worked at least five years as a member of the special operations forces and;

You have no more than a four year break-in-service since your separation from the special operations forces.

HIRING PROCESS:

  • Background investigation which includes, but is not limited to: criminal history, driving history, credit check, previous employment verification. The background waiver MUST BE SIGNED AND NOTARIZED.
  • Polygraph Examination
  • Panel Interview
  • Pre-employment Drug Screen (including nicotine panel)
  • Physical Abilities Testing and a Swimming Assessment is also required for this position.
  • Applicants who are selected to fill the positions will be required to complete an FDLE physical, drug screen, and psychological evaluation.
