The Tenafly Police Department is looking for qualified candidates to join our agency.
NJSACOP Written Exam: Monday, February 2, 2026 6:00PM at Tenafly High School
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
The general qualifications for employment with the Tenafly Police Department are:
- Be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of New Jersey;
- Have a valid New Jersey Driver’s License (upon appointment);
- Candidates must be between the age of 18-35 (must be appointed prior to 35th birthday);
- Candidates must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalency certificate. While a college degree or credits are not required, educational degrees and/or college credits will be considered;
- Prior police training or certification is not mandatory, but will be considered;
- Candidates must possess excellent moral character and a strong work ethic;
- Candidates must be in good mental and bodily health and pass a psychological assessment, drug test, and medical exam;
- Candidates must pass a background check, and be free from conviction of any crime;
- Candidates must serve a probationary period pending his or her completion of a basic police training course at a recognized training academy.
Current starting salary for academy recruits is $55,293 per year plus benefits. Upon graduation from the police academy, sworn police officers earn $61,860 per year with annual increases to a maximum $169,786 per year.
