Vineland - Public Safety Telecommunicator (Trainee)

The Vineland Police Department is looking for dedicated, customer service-oriented individuals who are ready to take on new challenges. Our training program requires no previous public safety experience. Public Safety Telecommunicators (PST) are both call taker and dispatcher, and assigned to the Communications Center located within our police department. The PST is responsible for delivering quality emergency communication services to the public, as well as providing accurate and timely dispatch support to first responder personnel.
Public Safety Telecommunicators have many duties including, but not limited to:
- Answer emergency and non-emergency calls
- Prioritize calls for service
- Dispatch and disseminate pertinent information to police personnel
- Transfer calls and work with other communication centers to dispatch fire and medical personnel
- Monitor and respond to radio traffic on multiple channels
- Accurate documenting of detailed information in the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system
- Required to learn and utilize various types of electronic and manual information recording systems
- Must become proficient in the use of:
- National Crime Information Center (NCIC)
- NJ Motor Vehicle Commission Database (NJMVC)
- NJ Courts Database; to include ATS/ACS/DV Registry/etc.
- other Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS)
- Must always remain calm and professional in high-stress situations
Minimum Requirements:
- Be a U.S citizen
- Be a resident of New Jersey
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
- Possess a valid New Jersey driver's license
- Have no criminal record
- Pass a drug screening
- Pass a background investigation
- Pass a psychological examination
- Pass an oral interview with the Chief of Police / Administrative staff
- Ability to type (preferably 30wpm)
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication skills
- Availability to work nights, weekends & holidays
Testing Process:
- Pass a computerized examination
- Pass background check & drug screening
- Observe a Public Safety Telecommunicator for two (2) hours in our Communications Center

- Salary range of $56,494 to $85,602 (based on current contractual agreement set to expire on 12/31/2026)
