PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATOR (DISPATCHER)
Part-Time | Shift Work
This part-time position may transition to a full-time role if a current full-time position becomes vacant, based on performance, departmental needs, and eligibility.
About the Role
Public Safety Telecommunicators (Dispatchers) are the critical first link between the public and emergency responders. In this role, you will receive emergency and non-emergency calls, gather vital information, and dispatch police, fire, and EMS personnel quickly and accurately. You will help ensure the safety of the community by remaining calm under pressure and making sound decisions during high-stress situations.
Dispatchers staff both the Communications Center and the Police Headquarters reception area. Responsibilities include handling incoming calls, monitoring radio traffic, tracking emergency personnel, and assisting members of the public who enter police headquarters. This position requires professionalism, focus, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Supervision
Works under the general direction of a police supervisor; must be able to perform duties independently.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, evaluate, and determine appropriate responses to police, fire, and medical emergency calls
- Provide emergency medical pre-arrival instructions when required
- Dispatch police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel via two-way radio systems
- Redirect calls to appropriate agencies (Public Works, Animal Control, Recreation Department, State Police, etc.)
- Monitor and maintain the status and location of police officers, fire units, supervisors, detectives, and mutual aid personnel
- Operate radio consoles, telephone systems, computer terminals, and Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) systems
- Monitor CCTV camera systems within the Borough
- Broadcast critical information to patrol units and relay instructions or inquiries
- Monitor prisoners and assist members of the public at Police Headquarters reception

The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator who can remain calm, focused, and professional during emergencies. This individual can multitask efficiently, prioritize competing demands, and make sound decisions with limited supervision.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations
- Strong listening and multitasking abilities
- Familiarity with radio procedures and emergency call handling
- Proficient keyboarding and computer skills
- Ability to analyze information and make logical decisions quickly
- Ability to read maps and interpret visual data from multiple media sources
- Ability to accurately relay instructions and information
- Ability to establish priorities and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
Qualifications
- Open to residents and non-residents
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Valid New Jersey Driver’s License
- Ability to work shift schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to successfully pass a public safety telecommunicator examination
Special Requirements
Candidates must successfully complete:
- Background investigation
- Medical examination
- Drug screening

Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly Rate: $20/hour
- Paid Training, including Police, Fire, and EMS Dispatch certifications
- Flexible scheduling, based on availability
