The Pompton Lakes Police Department proudly serves a close-knit suburban community of approximately 11,000 residents located in Passaic County, New Jersey. Covering just under 3 square miles, Pompton Lakes offers a blend of residential neighborhoods, a vibrant downtown business district, and numerous parks and recreation areas that contribute to the borough’s small-town character and quality of life.
The department is a full-service law enforcement agency that responds to roughly 24,000 calls for service annually, providing 24-hour police coverage through patrol, investigations, traffic enforcement, and community policing initiatives. Specialized assignments include the Detective Bureau, School Resource Officer, Traffic Safety, and community engagement programs such as the Junior Police Academy and National Night Out.

Minimum Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen and resident of New Jersey.
- Must possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
- Must be a graduate of a certified New Jersey Police Training Commission academy and hold a current PTC certification in good standing.
- Must be at least 18 years of age and not over 35 years of age at time of appointment (age exemptions apply for prior military service as permitted by statute).
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED. College credits or military service preferred.
- Must be of good moral character, with no criminal convictions that would bar employment as a police officer in New Jersey.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English clearly and intelligently.
- Must successfully pass a background investigation, medical examination, and psychological evaluation.
- Must meet the physical fitness standards established by the New Jersey Police Training Commission.
- Must be able to perform all essential duties of a police officer, including shift work, weekends, and holidays.
Position Summary
Under supervision, a Police Officer performs general duty police work involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, prevention of crime, and preservation of peace and order within the Borough of Pompton Lakes. Officers patrol assigned areas by vehicle or on foot, respond to calls for service, make arrests, investigate incidents, enforce motor vehicle laws, and provide assistance to the public. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policies and the rules and regulations of the New Jersey Police Training Commission and Civil Service Commission.
General Duties
- Patrol assigned areas on foot or in a patrol vehicle to deter and detect crime.
- Respond promptly to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, including motor vehicle accidents, disputes, and medical emergencies.
- Enforce state laws, municipal ordinances, and traffic regulations;issue summonses or make arrests as required.
- Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of crimes, accidents, and incidents;collect evidence and prepare accurate reports.
- Maintain order at public gatherings, emergencies, or disaster scenes;assist with evacuations or crowd control as needed.
- Provide aid to victims, render first aid, and summon additional emergency services when required.
- Operate and maintain assigned vehicles, weapons, radios, and equipment in a safe and functional condition.
- Testify in court regarding investigations, arrests, and enforcement actions.
- Promote positive community relations through courteous and professional interaction with the public.
- Maintain familiarity with departmental procedures, local geography, and community needs.
- Perform related duties as required to ensure the safety and security of residents and visitors.

Hiring Process
The Pompton Lakes Police Department follows a thorough, fair, and transparent hiring process for intergovernmental transfers and PTC-certified officers. Candidates must currently hold New Jersey Police Training Commission (PTC) certification and be in good standing with their current or former law enforcement agency.
The selection process typically includes the following phases:
- Application Review – All applications are screened to verify eligibility, certification status, and prior law enforcement experience.
- Agency Authorization – Candidates must provide written confirmation from their current employing agency indicating that the department and governing body are willing to authorize and sign off on the intergovernmental transfer prior to the start of the full background investigation.
- Oral Interview – Qualified candidates participate in an interview panel conducted by department command staff to assess professionalism, communication skills, and suitability for the agency’s mission and culture.
- Background Investigation – A comprehensive investigation is conducted to evaluate employment history, performance, criminal record, financial responsibility, and character references.
- Psychological and Medical Evaluation – Candidates must pass both evaluations to ensure fitness for duty in accordance with New Jersey Police Training Commission standards.
- Drug Screening – All applicants must successfully complete a pre-employment drug test prior to appointment.
- Final Interview and Appointment – Selected candidates meet with the Chief of Police and Borough Administration prior to a conditional or final offer of employment.
- Lateral transfers are not required to attend a police academy if already PTC-certified;however, successful completion of a departmental field training program is mandatory before independent assignment.
