PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATOR (DISPATCHER)
General Description:
Police dispatchers are emergency communications professionals who are called upon to ensure the successful transmission of information from callers in distress to responding emergency personnel. Their work involves providing accurate and timely information to police officers, firefighters, and EMT’s and dispatching the appropriate personnel to incidents and emergencies through a two-way communications system within the municipality. Dispatchers are used to staff the communication center and the reception are of Police Headquarters. At the communications center, the dispatcher will receive requests, transmit messages, and track personnel. At the reception area, the dispatchers will be responsible for monitoring prisoners and assisting the public who enter police headquarters.
The ideal candidate must be primarily an excellent communicator and able to remain calm and composed, especially in emergency situations since they are required to make critical emergency response decisions. They must be able to multi-task as well as take the appropriate action with little supervision.
Supervision Received:
Works under the direction of a police supervisor, however must be able to work independently.
Examples of Duties:
- Receives and determines appropriate response to police, fire and emergency calls.
- Provides emergency medical pre-arrival instructions
- Redirects calls to the appropriate service(s) e.g., Public Works Department, Animal Control, Recreation Department, State Police, etc.
- Broadcasts information to police radio patrol units in vicinity regarding complaints and relays instructions or questions from remote units.
- Operates telephone console, radio console, computer terminal, and monitors Automatic License Plate Reader Programs.
- Monitors CCTV cameras within the Borough.
- Maintain status and location of patrol officers, officers of specialized units, officers working Side-jobs, police supervisors, detectives, officers on special assignment, fire apparatus, fire supervisors, and fire mutual aid.

Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
- Good knowledge of appropriate Borough services and procedures.
- Good knowledge of radio procedures
- Considerable ability in oral and written communications.
- Considerable ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations.
- Good listening ability.
- Ability to Multi-task
- Familiarity/proficiency in keyboard / typing skills
- Ability to establish goals and set priorities.
- Ability to obtain and analyze facts to reach logical conclusions.
- Ability to read and discern visual images on a variety of media.
- Ability to apply existing call codes to emergency situations.
- Ability to relay instructions or questions accurately and clearly.
- Ability to read road maps.
Qualifications:
- Residents and Non-Residents may apply
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid New Jersey Drivers License
- Ability to work shiftwork including weekends, holidays and various times
- Ability to pass a public safety telecommunicator test
