ENTRY LEVEL / CERTIFIED PATROL OFFICER
Application Information
The Mahwah Police Department will be administering a selection process for an entry-level position(s). All applicants for appointment as members of the Police Department of the Township of Mahwah (T.O 2-16.4) shall:
- Not be less than 18 years of age nor more than 35 years of age at the time of appointment.
- Be a Citizen of the United States and a current resident of New Jersey at the time of appointment.
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalency certificate recognized by the Department of Education of the State of New Jersey.
Applicants must meet ONE of the below eligibility criteria:
- Currently a sworn law enforcement officer at the municipal, county, state or federal level
- Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Have been honorably discharged from active duty from a branch of the United States Military Service
- Currently enrolled/accepted to an approved alternate route program at a certified NJ PTC police academy
The selection process will include the following:
- Phase 1:Physical Fitness Test - Sunday, May 18, 2025 – 8:00 AM
- Phase 2: Written Test - Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at 7:00 PM
- Phase 3:Interviews: (1) Police Board and (2) Chief of Police and Command Staff - Dates to be Determined
- Phase 4: Comprehensive Background Investigation / Records Check
- Phase 5:Medical Evaluation and Stress Test OR access to recent record of approved exam
- Phase 6:Psychological Evaluation OR access to recent record of approved exam
Candidates who successfully pass Phase 1, will move on to Phase 2. Candidates who pass the written exam as well, will then be placed in rank order based on a combination of Phase 1 and 2 scores. This combined score will be used to establish a ranking to determine interview order.
Candidates selected to move on to Phase 3, will be contacted via PoliceApp to schedule an interview. The resulting eligibility list will expire on September 1, 2025, or sooner if top tier candidate list has been exhausted.

Every applicant must bring the completed and signed “PT Test Dr. Waiver” form on the day of the physical test or you will be disqualified from the process!
2025 Starting Salary: $45,929 and $51,439 if PTC Certified
Any falsifications or untruthfulness throughout the duration of the process will result in disqualification.

Waiver Information:
Any waiver determination for out an of state officer would be made by the PTC upon appointment. Do not message MPD regarding waivers/out of state transfers.
