ENTRY LEVEL / CERTIFIED PATROL OFFICER

Application Information

The Mahwah Police Department will be administering a selection process for an entry-level position(s). All applicants for appointment as members of the Police Department of the Township of Mahwah shall:

  • Be between 18 and 35 years old;
  • Be a Citizen of the United States, a current resident of New Jersey, and possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license at the time of appointment;
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalency certificate recognized by the Department of Education of the State of New Jersey;

Applicants must meet ONE of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Currently a sworn law enforcement officer at the municipal, county, state or federal level
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Have been honorably discharged from active duty from a branch of the United States Military Service
  • Currently enrolled/accepted to an approved alternate route program at a certified NJ PTC police academy

Selection Process and Timeline:

  • Phase 1: Physical Fitness Test - Sunday, May 3, 2026 – 8:00 AM  
  • Phase 2: Written Test - Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 7:00 PM
  • Phase 3: Interviews: Police Board and Command Staff - Dates TBD
  • Phase 4: Background Investigation / Records Check
  • Phase 5: Medical Evaluation and Stress Test*
  • Phase 6: Psychological Evaluation* 

*Recent records of approved exams may be accepted.

Ranking and Interview Eligibility:

Candidates must pass Phase 1 to advance to the Phase 2 written exam. Following Phase 2, candidates will be ranked based on their combined scores from both phases.

This ranking determines the order of interviews. Please note that interviews are conducted in rank order until all position(s) are filled; therefore, not all passing candidates are guaranteed an interview.

The resulting eligibility list remains valid until September 1, 2026, or until the candidate pool is exhausted.

Written and Physical Fitness Test Information

Every applicant must bring the completed and signed “Physical Fitness Test Medical Waiver” form on the day of the physical test or you will be disqualified from the process!

2026 Starting Salary: $47,008 and $52,648 if PTC Certified.

Any falsifications or untruthfulness throughout the duration of the process will result in
disqualification.

Waiver Information:

Any waiver determination for an out of state officer would be made by the PTC upon appointment. See: https://www.njoag.gov/about/divisions-and-offices/office-of-public-integrity-and-accountability-home/police-training-commission/waivers/ for more information.

No waivers for Correction Officers. Do not message MPD regarding waivers/out of state transfers.
