These officers have the limited authority and arrest powers when compared to a full-time police officer. The training is conducted at the Cape May County Police Academy and the Special Officer I is certified by the New Jersey Police Training Commission.
This hiring process is for the Basic Course for SLEO I Officers. The training program is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2025. The program includes training in baton, handcuffing, oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray, defensive tactics, disorderly persons offenses, traffic control and traffic law, first aid, use of force, various patrol concepts, and ethics.
These officers have the same authority and arrest powers as a full-time police officer while they are employed and on-duty. In addition to the above responsibilities, they have the responsibility of carrying a firearm.
The training is intense and is conducted at the Cape May County Police Academy. This hiring process is for the 66th Basic Course for SLEO II Officers, which is tentatively scheduled mid December through the end of April. Training is held 4 days a week. Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday 3pm-10pm and Saturday from 7am to 5pm.
The course of study includes, history of law enforcement, the NJ court system, community responsibility, criminal law, arrest search and seizure, use of force, patrol vehicle operations, motor vehicle law, first responder emergency rescue, firearms, baton, chemical agents, self-defense, patrol tactics, criminal law, communications, report writing, court room testimony, military drill, and physical fitness and additional law enforcement training. Graduating Officers can apply for college credits at Atlantic Cape Community College and receive full New Jersey State Special Law Enforcement Certification at graduation.
$18/hour Class I Officer - $20/hour Class II Officer
Ocean City is a progressive department which currently employees 68 sworn police officers. It relies on Special Law Enforcement Officers to supplement our force during our busy season. Ocean City is an island resort that has a high influx of seasonal residents and tourists during the summer months. Our population grows from approximately 12,000 to over 150,000 during the summer months. We respond to approximately 45,000 service calls per year.
SLEO’s are utilized in a variety of capacities. Assignments are made based on departmental demands. Assignments include Patrol Squads, the Boardwalk Power Squad, Patrol Squad Power Squad, Community Oriented Policing Unit, Detective Bureau, and the Marine Unit.
Ocean City is a customer service-oriented town with a reputation as “America’s Greatest Family Resort.” The Police Department is an accredited agency through the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police.
Applicants must comply with the following basic qualification standards:
United States Citizen that possesses a valid driver’s license
Must reside in New Jersey at time of employment.
Read and write the English language
Age 18 or older
Possess a High School Diploma or Equivalent
Be of good moral character
Pass Background Investigation, Oral Interview, Psychological Profile, Medical Examination, Drug Testing
*A positive drug test will result in the following:
-Dropped from consideration for employment
-Report to the Central Drug Registry maintained by the New Jersey State Police
-Preclude the applicant from being considered for future law enforcement employment for a period of two (2) years form the date of testing
-If currently a sworn law enforcement officer, notification to his/her agency and you will be terminated from employment and permanently barred from future law enforcement employment in New Jersey.
*Refusal to submit to a drug test shall result in no longer being considered for law enforcement
