              2026 SUMMER SPECIAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS CLASS I

                                 THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION IS APRIL 15, 2026

SLEO CLASS I:

These officers are empowered to issue summons for motor vehicle violations, city ordinance violations, petty disorderly persons violations and disorderly persons violations. Their primary duties are parking enforcement and crowd control.

These officers receive two weeks of formal training, 80 hours, at the Cape May County Police Academy that includes classes on criminal law, report writing, motor vehicle law, use of force, responsibility to the community, CPR and first aid, handcuffing, baton and self defense techniques. These officers do not carry a firearm. They receive New Jersey State certification as a Class One Special Law Enforcement Officer. The training is anticipated to be held in May 26, 2026, through June 4, 2026. unless you are currently certified. Please note: Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must comply with the following basic qualification standards:

  • United States Citizen with a valid New Jersey driver’s license upon appointment
  • Age 18 or above
  • Possess a High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate (State Board of Education)
  • Good moral character (free of criminal convictions)
  • Ability to distinguish colors accurately
  • Normal hearing
  • Favorable Background Check, Medical Examination, Psychological Profile, and Drug Testing

HIRING PROCESS:

  • Application Review
  • Oral Interview
  • Conditional Offer of Employment
  • Background Investigation, Medical Examination, Psychological Testing (if needed), Drug Testing

 NOTIFICATION OF DRUG TESTING:

The pre-employment process for the SLEO positions will include drug testing. A negative result is a condition of employment. A positive result will cause:

  1. the applicant being dropped from consideration for employment; and
  2. cause the applicant's name to be reported to the central drug registry maintained by the Division of the State Police; and
  3. preclude the applicant from being considered for future law enforcement for a period of two years from the date of the drug test.

In addition, if the applicant is currently employed by another agency as a sworn law enforcement officer and the officer tests positive for illegal drug use, the officer's employing agency will be notified of the test results and the officer will be terminated from employment and permanently barred from future law enforcement employment in New Jersey. A refusal to submit to a drug test will result in the applicant no longer being considered for law enforcement employment in New Jersey.
