Police Officer – Garnett Police Department
The City of Garnett is seeking an intelligent, self-motivated, community-oriented individual to join the Garnett Police Department as a Full-Time Patrol Officer.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate excellent communication and problem-solving skills, strong integrity, and a commitment to community service. Duties & Responsibilities
Patrol Officers are responsible for a variety of law enforcement and public safety duties, including:
- Enforcing federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
- Responding to calls for servicePatrolling residential neighborhoods and business districts
- Deterring and detecting criminal activity
- Investigating complaints and incidents
- Citing and/or arresting law violators
- Following up on pending reports and cases
- Preparing and serving civil processes
- Protecting people and property
- Securing and protecting prisoners
- Proactively completing department priorities and self-initiated police work when not responding to calls
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Be a United States citizen
- Be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment
- Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Possess a valid Kansas driver's license
- Be legally permitted to own, carry, and use a firearm in accordance with the Gun Control Act of 1968
- Meet the department's criminal history, driving history, and drug-use requirements
- Successfully complete all phases of the hiring process
Criminal History
Applicants must not have committed, been convicted of, had a conviction expunged for, or been placed on diversion or deferred judgment for:
- A felony offense
- A misdemeanor involving domestic violence
- An offense that reflects negatively on the applicant's honesty, integrity, or competence
Applicants must not currently be charged with or under indictment for criminal activity other than minor traffic violations and must not currently be on probation.
Drug & Driving History
Applicants must not have a history involving the possession, sale, distribution, manufacture, or transportation of illegal drugs and must not have any felonious drug use within the past 10 years.
Applicants must not have been convicted of, pleaded guilty or no contest to, or received diversion for a serious traffic violation within the past three years, including DUI, reckless driving, hit and run, vehicular homicide, transporting an open container, eluding a police officer, or negligent homicide.
Hiring Process
Qualified applicants must successfully complete:
- Written aptitude test
- Physical fitness test
- Interview board
- Polygraph examination
- Extensive background investigation
- Drug screening
- Psychological testing
Salary & Benefits
- Patrol Officer Pay Scale: $24.50–$37.10/hour
- Starting Wage: $24.50–$31.00/hour, depending on qualifications
- Employees receive a $0.50/hour increase after successfully completing the probationary period.

$3,500 Housing Bonus
Officers who live within the City Limits of Garnett may qualify for a $3,500 annual housing bonus, paid on the anniversary of their hire date.
Officers must reside within the city limits for a full year and provide proof of residency to qualify.
Schedule
Patrol Officers work 12-hour shifts, totaling 84 scheduled hours every two weeks, with every other Friday through Sunday off regardless of seniority.
Overtime is paid after 80 hours within a two-week pay period.
