- The following information will explain the Shenandoah Police Department’s hiring process.
- There are several steps in the process that each applicant must pass before moving on to the next step and ultimately receiving an offer of employment.
- Applicants who do not meet the Minimum Requirements will be disqualified.
- Applicants should review the Applicant disqualifier’s link before applying for a position with the Shenandoah Police Department.
- Applicants who meet minimum requirements and do not have a disqualifier should complete the steps below.
Step 1: Online Application
- Individuals who are interested in applying will need to complete an online application.
- Online applications will be placed in a queue and reviewed in the order they are received.
- Applicants who pass the initial application process will be emailed date and times of testing.
- Applicants who do not pass the application process will receive an email notifying them of the disqualification and time associated with the disqualifier.
Step 2: Physical Fitness Testing
- Applicants who complete the Online Application and are qualified, will receive an invitation to attend the Testing Process.
- Applicants must arrive at the Shenandoah Police Department by 08:30 a.m. on the date of Testing.
- Applicants who do not arrive on time will be disqualified.
- Applicants must pass a Blood Pressure (BP) screening, prior to any physical testing. An applicant with a Blood Pressure reading above 150 systolic and 90 diastolic (150/90 BP) will be given 5 minutes to relax, and the blood pressure screening will be taken again. If after the second reading the applicant’s blood pressure remains above 150/90 BP, the applicant will be disqualified from proceeding in the testing process.
*It is recommended that the applicant refrain from tobacco, caffeine, or a pre-work out supplement before the BP test, as this could alter the screening results.
- Applicants will be required to complete and pass all the physical fitness tests to proceed with the process:
- One and a half mile run in 17:09 minutes
- 20 Push-ups in 1:00 minute
- 23 Sit-ups in 1:00 minute
Applicants that successfully pass the physical fitness testing will move on to the written test (same day).
Step 3: Written Test (POST)
- Applicants will complete a written examination. Standard & Associates, Inc. The National Police Officer Selection Test (POST). The test is an entry-level basic skills test with four parts consisting of Math, Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Incident Report Writing.
Applicants who pass the written examination will proceed to the Firearms Qualification (same day).
Step 4: Firearms Qualification
- Qualifying applicants will then meet the Range Officer at the range (address provided day of test). Applicant must provide their own duty weapon, three (3) magazines, duty belt, holsters and fifty (50) rounds of ammunition.
Applicants that pass the firearms qualifications, will be given a Personal History Statement (PHS) to be completed within a specified time.
- It is recommended that the Applicant begin completing the PHS and obtaining required documents immediately upon receiving the packet.
Step 5: Background Investigation
- Applicants will make an appointment to turn in and meet with an Investigator for an initial interview, and to go over the PHS. Applicants will undergo a complete background investigation using the Personal History Statement

Step 6: Oral Board

- Applicants should wear business dress attire, for their board.
- The Oral Board will be a panel of Shenandoah Police Officers with rank varying from Officer to Lieutenant.
- Questions asked will give applicants an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities considered basic attributes of a Police Officer.
- Top Applicants from the process will continue to the Police Chief's interview..

Step 7: Conditional Job Offer
- Once the Applicant passes all prior phases, he or she may be offered a position contingent on satisfactorily passing the following:
- Medical / Physical Examination
- Drug Screening
- Psychological Examination
