The Lexington Police Department welcomes you to apply for the position of police officer with the Town of Lexington.  We have partnered with Policeapp.com and Police Exam Solutions for the initial examination process.  The recruitment process requires a potential candidate to successfully complete the entire battery of testing, which includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following steps:

The written examination:

The written examination will consist of two components.  The first part of the examination will require you to complete a series of essay questions on-line. This questionnaire MUST be completed before attending the written examination.  You will receive further details and a link via email after submitting your application.  Check your email for the PPI-Portal Registration instructions.

The second part of this examination will be administered by Police Exam Solutions (“PES”) on August 15, 2020 at the Lexington High School, 251 Waltham Street, Lexington, MA.  The examination will begin promptly at 9:00 am.  You must follow all directions of PES related to the exam. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.  Further information on the written exam will be supplied to all applicants at a time to be determined, but well in advance of the examination.  Additional information may be found on our website:  https://www.lexingtonma.gov/police

Physical abilities testing (“PAT”):

The PAT will take place after the written examination, at a time to be determined. Candidates with the highest scores on the written exam will be invited to attend the PAT testing. A passing grade on the written exam does not necessarily guarantee an invitation to the PAT.  Further information relative to the PAT will be posted with other recruitment materials on Policeapp.com and the Lexington Police website.  PLEASE TAKE THE PAT SERIOUSLY! The Lexington Police Department has seen a significant failure rate at the PAT.  You MUST review the PAT standards and begin training for these events to ensure your success.  Any candidate that fails any of the testing components will be immediately disqualified from further testing for the remainder of this recruitment drive.

Interview Panel:

The interview panel will be held at a time to be determined based on the current staffing needs of the Lexington Police Department.  Candidates that are invited to participate will be given advanced notice and further instructions at the necessary time.  No prior police experience is necessary to participate.  There may also be a writing assignment given to candidates at the time of the interview.

Interview with the Chief of Police:

The Town Manager is the appointing authority for the Town of Lexington.  The Chief of Police will conduct interviews with selected candidates when an opening is ready to be filled and make recommendations to The Town Manager.

Conditional Offer of Employment:

This contract is entered into between the candidate for hire and the Town of Lexington.  This contract only extends to a candidate that is offered a position as a police officer.  Once signed, the department will agree to hire the candidate provided all “conditions” are met. All financial obligations relative to the conditional offer are borne by the Town of Lexington.  The conditions are successful completion of the:

  • Background Investigation: which will be conducted by The Lexington Police Department.
  • Medical Examination: a full medical examination, in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Commonwealth of MA; including a drug screening.
  • Psychological Examination: the psychological may consist of a battery of written tests
  • and interview(s) conducted by a trained psychotherapist.

Those candidates that require initial training will undergo all necessary steps for admission to the police academy.  The specific academy that the candidate will attend depends on multiple factors, but the selection is determined by the Chief of Police.

Academy training:

Any candidate requiring initial training must successfully pass the academy.  Currently, academy training in MA is 22-25 weeks; and is subject to change by Municipal Police Training Committee (“MPTC”) mandate.

Field Training:

Officers that successfully pass the academy will then begin their career with the department as a full-time patrol officer and must successfully pass a 10-12 week field training program (“FTO”).  The FTO program will serve to bridge the academy experience with actual police work. Candidates will be assigned to various veteran training officers throughout this period and will also be expected to successfully complete training, as well as know the department’s rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

All newly appointed officers will be considered “probationary” for their first year of service following completion of The FTO Program.
