The MTPD offers first class benefits, including health, dental, eye care, holiday pay, longevity pay, educational bonus, and more, on top of an outstanding pay rate.  The 2016 starting salary for probationary officers is approx. $43,300 while officers with experience may earn up to $59,200 to start. The 2016 top officer salary is $76, 200. 

POLICE OFFICER SELECTION PROCESS 

  1. FORMAL REQUIREMENTS 

Review the minimum requirements listed below as well as the job requirements described on the attached job description for Police Officer.  If you meet these requirements, you may continue with the Police Officer selection process. 

      Age:  You must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire. 

      Education:  You must be a high school graduate or have a GED equivalent. 

      Citizenship:  U.S. citizenship is not required prior to employment.  However,

      non-citizens must have applied for citizenship before application for Police Officer.

      Proof of your citizenship application will be required during the selection process. 

      Vision:  20/70 uncorrected in the dominant eye, correctable to 20/20; 20/200 uncorrected in the weaker eye, correctable to 20/40. 

      Physical:  Your body weight must be appropriate for an officer of your height and build.      

      Health:  You must be in sufficient health to withstand the rigors of police work and have no conditions that would restrict your ability to safely perform such work with or without reasonable accommodations. 

      Background:  Your character and standing in the community must be of the highest caliber.  Your background must demonstrate you respect the law and the rights of others, possess high moral standards of character and integrity and are a dependable and conscientious member of the community.  Your background should contain no felony convictions or history of criminal conduct, including misdemeanor violations. 

      Driving Record and License:  Candidates must possess a current valid Pennsylvania or other State’s Operator’s License and have a good driving record. 

      Police Officer Training:  You must have Act 120 Certification or the ability to be certified prior to the date of hire. 

  1. FORMAL APPLICATION 

A completed formal application must be received by the Department no later than the application filing deadline.  Applications will not be received except when an opening has been announced.  All applications received during the application period, except for those belonging to an applicant who is hired, will be placed in an inactive file for one year.  If an applicant is interested in re-applying at any time; a new application form must be completed. 

  1. WRITTEN EXAMINATION 

 Applicants must have successfully completed the LCCPA written exam on September 13, 2015 in order to submit an application

  1. PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST 

 Applicants  mush have successfully completed the LCCPA Physical Fitness test held on September 13, 2015 in order to submit an application

     The test battery consists of:  a 300-meter run within 71 seconds; sit ups – 29 repetitions;    

     push-ups – 25 repetitions and a 1.5-mile run within 16 minutes 28 seconds.  

  1. ORAL BOARD INTERVIEW

During an Oral Board interview, you will be asked to respond to questions, which serve to verify your employment and educational history and provide further insight into your ability to relate to others, communicate clearly and show sound judgment in problem solving. 

  1. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION 

A background investigation will be conducted on the applications with the top scores on the written examination and oral board interview.  Applicants may be asked to complete forms to provide additional data for the examination.  

  1. POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION

 Applicants who pass the background investigation will be asked to complete a polygraph exam.    

  1. CONDITIONAL OFFER 

Applicants who successfully pass the above steps may be given a conditional offer of employment.  After this offer is made, but before your appointment as Police Officer, you must also successfully pass the following medical-related tests and examinations:

Medical Examination, Physical Stress Test, Psychological Profile, Drug Test. 

  1. CERTIFICATION 

Finally, you must be accepted for Certification by the Municipal Police Officers’  Education and Training Commission.  

  1. PROBATIONARY PERIOD 

Once you have been appointed as a full-time Police Officer, you will serve a one (1) year probationary period during which time your performance will be closely observed.  The Township shall retain only those probationary employees who have demonstrated the ability to perform at a level expected by the Department.  A  probationary employee may be separated at any time during the probationary period  with or without cause when, in the judgment of the Police Chief, the probationary employee’s level of performance does not merit continuation on the job.
