POLICE OFFICER

Minimum Requirements:

  • 1. Must be a citizen of the United States
  • 2. Must possess a valid New Jersey Police Training Commission (PTC) Certificate.
  • 3. Must be a SLEO Class 2 (COMMINGLED CLASS), Alternate Route, or if you are currently a Police Officer, your current police employer must authorize your departure as an intergovernmental transfer. 
  • 3. Meet the requirements of and be eligible for membership in Police and Firemen’s Retirement System (PFRS).
  • 4. Free of conviction of a crime constituting an indictable offense or any crime or offense involving moral turpitude
  • 5. Not less than 18 nor more than 35 years of age at the announced closing date for filing applications for the position. In determining maximum age eligibility of veterans, the time spent in active military service during periods specified in Department of Personnel law and rules will be deducted from the attained age.
  • 6. Graduation from high school or vocational high school or possession of an approved high school equivalent certificate.
  • 7. Appointees will be required to possess New Jersey driver's license.

 

Job Description/General Duties:

During an assigned tour of duty, on foot, or in an automobile, patrols designated area to provide assistance and protection for persons, to safeguard property, to assure observance of the law, and to apprehend law-breakers; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

General patrol.
Responding to fights and domestic disputes.
Responding to service calls.
Traffic control and enforcement of traffic laws.
Responding to motor vehicle accidents.
Performing investigations.
Making arrests.
Providing court testimony.
Performing supportive and administrative duties.

Salary:

Starting salary for Certified Police Officers is step 2.

  • Step 1 Adjusted Base Pay $37,491.96
  • Step 2 Adjusted Base Pay $43,135.62
  • Step 3 Adjusted Base Pay $48, 780.45
  • Step 4 Adjusted Base Pay $54, 424.11
  • Step 5 Adjusted Base Pay $60,067.78
  • Step 6 Adjusted Base Pay $65,711.44
  • Step 7 Adjusted Base Pay $71,356.27
  • Step 8 Adjusted Base Pay $76,999.93
  • Step 9 Adjusted Base Pay $82,643.59
  • Step 10 Adjusted Base Pay $88,287.26
  • Step 11 Adjusted Base Pay $93,932.09
  • Step 12 Adjusted Base Pay $108,329.33

Officers move up one step for every 6 months of work in steps 1 through 8. Officer move up one step on their 1 year anniversary in steps 9 - 12.

 

Hiring Process:

Must have valid NJ Police Training Commission Certification from a Basic Police Officer Course or Special Law Enforcement Officer Class II  Certification (COMMINGLED CLASS).

  • Medical Exam (Pass/Fail)
  • Psychological Exam (Pass/Fail) (Unless a passing psychological exam was administered within 1 year of appointment date)
