Townsend Police Department

Townsend is located in Middlesex County, in north central Massachusetts.  It is north of Worcester on the New Hampshire border, and is part of the Montachusett Region. The town covers 33.11 square miles with a resident population of approximately 10,000.  There are approximately 3,385 housing units in Townsend, a robust business base, and four schools including the North Middlesex Regional High School.   The town is served by a full time police department consisting of 15 full time sworn officers, 5 reserve officers, and 2 civilian employees. 

The Townsend Police Department employs a community policing philosophy.  The department is committed to actively promoting community involvement through progressive community oriented policing strategies, problem solving, and a commitment to improving the quality of life in the Town of Townsend.  Programs such as Coffee with a Cop, National Night Out, Drug Takeback Days, and collaboration with community service groups involved in addressing substance abuse, mental health, and youth services allow for the development of relationships aimed at solving problems before they occur or in many cases, get worse.  These relationships give life to the philosophy that both the police and the community must work together as equal partners to identify, prioritize, and solve contemporary problems such as crime, drugs, fear of crime, and social and physical disorder with a the goal of improving quality of life..

 

Divisions

The department offers a number of assignments including mountain bike deployment, School Resource Officer, training unit, membership in the Northeast Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council with opportunities in SWAT, motor unit, communications, critical incident stress management, and more.
