ABOUT

A suburban community with a population of 18,331 Somerset is situated along the south coasts busy Route 195 corridor which runs through the City of Providence, Rhode Island in the west and the cities of Fall River and New Bedford Massachusetts to the east.

The Somerset Police Department currently employs 33 full-time sworn officers, 13 sworn reserve officers, 6 full-time public safety dispatchers as well as two administrative and custodial staff members.  A progressive agency, the Somerset Police Department is accredited by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission thereby attesting to its ongoing commitment to following established best practices in policing.  In addition to the patrol and detective divisions, our residents are also served by the departments School Resource Officer and Special Operations Division which include the Traffic Enforcement Unit, Motor Unit, Bicycle Patrol Unit, Drone Unit and Problem Oriented Policing Unit.  Committed to the community policing philosophy the Somerset Police Department has established numerous outreach programs which include a Police Athletic League, TRIAD Program, Citizen’s Police Academy, Police Explorers Program and more.

Our agency currently offers competitive pay and benefits which include education incentives of an increase in salary of 10%  for an Associate Degree in criminal justice of related field, 20% for a Bachelor’s Degree and 25% for a Masters or Juris Doctorate Degree.  Qualified lateral transfer candidates will have the opportunity to receive credit for years of service for purposes of pay and time off benefits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be a United States Citizen;​
  • Be at least 21 years of age at the time of the written examination;
  • Be a non-smoker;
  • Not be a convicted felon, or have any equivalent convictions that would be a felony in Massachusetts;
  • Submit to an in-depth background investigation;
  • Sign a consent form allowing the department to obtain records relating to your criminal, credit, employment, military, or financial history;
  • Be willing to perform shift work, including weekends, holidays and overtime on an emergency basis;
  • Possess a valid Massachusetts drivers license, or obtain one with six months of appointment;
  • Have the ability to obtain a Massachusetts Class A License to carry a firearm;
  • Have the ability to physically and mentally perform the essential functions of a police officer consistent with the requirements of the Americans’ with Disabilities Act (ADA);
  • Have the ability to pass the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Academy and be able to receive and maintain certification by the Massachusetts POST Commission;
  • Have a strong character background; and
  • Be willing and able to meet the duties and obligations of a Somerset Police Officer.

THE IDEAL CANDIATE WILL:

  • Have obtained an associate’s degree or higher, or be enrolled in a college Criminal Justice program or other applicable field of study.

TESTING REQUIREMENTS

  • Must pass the PES Entry Exam for law enforcement, with a 70% or higher. (Non-Lateral candidates only)
