The Hancock County Sheriff's Office in Greenfield, Indiana is recruiting for the 2023 Merit Deputy hiring process. This process will compile a list of candidates for future Merit Deputy positions. The department offers competitive pay, great benefits, up-to-date equipment, quality training, a new, state-of-the-art facility, and is a growing county filled with a supportive community.
The salary matrix starts at $54,000 increasing to $59,000 by year three, $63,000 by year 5, and continued annual increases, plus any rank or specialty pay.
The first step of the process will be Physical Agility Testing on April 1, 2023 at 9:00am at the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department (possible rain date of April 8, 2023). Those who pass will be invited to a written test on April 22, 2023. Subsequent steps will include a formal application, structured oral interview (by officers), a comprehensive background check, and merit board interview. Candidates offered employment will also be required to pass physical and psychological screening through Public Safety Medical.
Minimum requirements:
- High School Diploma/GED
- At least 21 years old
- Current Valid Driver’s License
- Clean Criminal Record

Dates:
Our hiring process consists of several steps. You will be expected to participate in all steps of the process, assuming you pass the requirements of the previous step. Below is a list of important dates for the process. There will be no make-up or alternate dates for any step of the process, unless the Hancock County Sheriff's Office is required to make changes due to inclement weather or other circumstances. If any dates or times change, participants will be notified as soon as possible.
Physical Agility - April 1, 2023 (possible rain date of April 8, 2023)
Written Test - April 22, 2023
Oral Interview - May 10 &/or 11, 2023 (You will only be required to be present one of these dates)
Merit Board Interview - Week of June 12-16, 2023 (You will only be required to be present one of these dates)
