The Bristol Police Department employs approximately 125 sworn officers, however these numbers are always growing due to service demands. Bristol has a diverse population of over 60,000 people. As a result, the police department has the opportunity to serve both urban and suburban areas. Officers see activity in many surroundings on a daily basis. From affluent neighborhoods to bustling housing projects, the City of Bristol offers a well rounded law enforcement career.
Staffing
The City is divided into 9 patrol zones. Beyond the 9 zone cars, there are also extra units within the patrol division that are staffed regularly and when grants provide. These units roam throughout the City focusing on specific problem areas, providing backup and taking calls as needed. They can increase patrol staffing levels to 20 or more cars on any given shift. These units include, but are not limited to... Special Detail Cars, Crime Suppression Units, Cover Cars, DWI Patrols, etc.
Financial Opportunities
Officers who work overtime can be compensated in pay (EXT) or earned vacation time (EVT). Scheduling can be flexible, with proper notice, allowing officers to work hours for one another, share EVT, etc. Due to the constant commercial expansion of the City, there are usually overtime shifts available, private jobs, construction and special details.
Patrol officers work a 4/2 schedule with 8 hour days. This means that officers get two days off after every four days of work. The rotating schedule may provide newer officers with valuable weekend and holiday time with their families.
